Description
Bistahieversor sealeyi
Temporal range: Late Cretaceous, Campanian, around ~75 Ma
Length: Around ~9 metres
Probable mass: Around ~2-3 tonnes
Etymology: Sealey's Bistahi destroyer
Bistahieversor is a genus of tyrannosauroid dinosaur, that lived around 75 Mya during the Late Cretaceous. Material from adolescent and adult Bistahieversor individuals has been found in the Kirtland Formation of New Mexico, United States.
The snout is deep, an indication that the feature is not unique to more derived tyrannosaurs such as Tyrannosaurus. Geographical barriers such as the newly forming Rocky Mountains may have isolated Bistahieversor from the more derived northern tyrannosaurs.
Bistahieversor is highly distinguished from other tyrannosaurs by the possession of 64 teeth, an extra opening above the eye, and a keel along the lower jaw. The opening above the eye is thought to have accommodated an air sac that would have lightened the skull. Bistahieversor had a complex joint at its "forehead" that would have prevented movement at the joint, stabilising the skull.
